Jan. 26: Henry Coe Park - CANCELLED!
- Time: Sunday 8:30am (at the Bechtel I-Center, Stanford)
- Driving time: 1h 15' (each way) (30 mi. highway, 14 mi. winding road)
- Distance: 7-10 miles (not decided yet)
On this Superbowl Sunday we will hike in the second largest state
park of California. The park has 89,000 acres, 200 miles of trails
and you can go as high as 3,600 feet. But probably we will not
check all those numbers.
Depending on the trail and weather conditions and on how we feel that
morning we will try a loop from 7 to 10 miles and with elevation gains
from 200 to 1500 feet.

Feb. 02: Joseph Grant Park
- Time: Sunday 8:00am (at the Bechtel I-Center, Stanford)
- Driving time: about 1h 15' (each way)
- Distance: about 10 miles (not decided yet)
- (expected return to Stanford before 6pm)
Located in the hills east of San Jose, Joseph D. Grant County Park is
the largest park managed by the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation
Department. This 9522-acre (3850-hectare) park ranges in elevation from
1200 feet (375 meters) to 3000 feet (915 meters), and has a 40-mile
(65-kilometer) trail system that offers visitors the opportunity to
hike, mountain bike, or horseback ride through some of the most
beautiful scenery in the Bay Area. I haven't been to the park before
and do not yet know which trail I actually will take but the hike will
be about 10 miles long (the trail system allows for some flexibility).
This is a hike that the outing club hasn't done in years!

Saturday Feb. 08: Mission Peak
- Length of hike: ~10 miles
- Elevation gain: approximately 2200 ft.
- Meet: 8:30 am at the Bechtel Center, Stanford
- Driving time: 1.5hr (each way)
Mission peak is located in the
East Bay, it's 2527 ft high and it's one of the 6 peaks that form
the Rim of the Bay.
We will start at the Sunol Regional Wilderness Visitor Center
(elev. 390 ft) at the Ohlone Wilderness Trail. The short section of the
trail which is in Sunol Regional Wilderness is on a narrow, scenic path
hand-built by California Conservation Corps crews, there is a scenic
overlook along the way with views of Sunol Valley. Continuing westward,
the trail crosses Calaveras Road (elev 770 ft). From that point, the
trail follows fire roads through oak woodlands and crossing several
creeks. Continuing to the west, the trail enters lands leased from San
Francisco Water Department (SFWD), an area of grasslands
interspersed with groves of oaks. 2 miles from Mission Peak,
we'll leave the leased land and enter the Mission Peak Regional
Preserve (elev 1820 ft). Near the top of Mission Peak, the trail
contours around the peak, but a steep half mile climb will take us
to the summit (elev 2527 ft). From the summit, we will have panoramic
views of San Francisco, the South Bay and the Santa Cruz
Mountains. In the way back, we will take a different trail back to the
SFWD leased lands. From that point, we will follow the same trails we
used in our way to Mission Peak back to Sunol Regional Wilderness.
Note: if you live closer to Sunol than to the Stanford I-Center,
please contact me for an alternative meeting point.

Wear good boots or sturdy shoes. As usual, bring lunch, water
and a jacket. Also bring a flashlight since we will go
through the caves if they are open.
Alternative meeting time/place at the Bear Gulch visitor center
(east side of the park) at 10am.
Mar. 23: Mount Tamalpais
- Meet: 8:00am, at the Bechtel I-center, Stanford.
- Driving time: 1.5 hr
- Hike distance: 10-12 miles
- Elevation diff.: 1500-2000 feet
A 10-12 mile loop on Mt Tamalpaias in Marin County,
through grasslands and forest, visiting one or two
historical sites as well. Starting at Mountain Home,
we'll hike through the forest to Pantoll campground,
then north along the coastal trail, from which we'll
be able to see and hear the ocean 1,500 feet below.
>From the end of the coastal trail we'll have a choice
of several routes back, some harder than others.
Hopefully we'll see some wildflowers, too.
Alternative meeting time and place is at the Mountain Home
parking area at 9:45.
Directions to Mountain Home:
Go north across the Golden Gate bridge and take Highway 1
from Marin City. On top of the hills, turn right on
the Panoramic Highway (follow the signs to Mt. Tam).
Mountain Home is a group of houses about 3 miles north
on the Panoramic Highway. We think the parking lot is
on the left hand side of the road.
